Someplace next to the cryogenically frozen head of Walt Disney, preferably

14 April 2008

Has anyone ever put stuff in storage in NYC? Who did you use and how did that work? I’m pricing things out for my move in 6 weeks and it’s already overwhelming me. I’d much rather be thinking about when I’m going to find the time to do my Upper East Side farewell tour via photos, visiting Dorrian’s Red Hand and “that place on second ave where I threw up that one time” and taking pictures so I’ll never forget them.

But yeah. I would love to hear about your storage needs.

I’ve never done it for myself, but I’ve helped a few low-budget films and filmmakers move stuff in and out of storage. Manhattan Mini Storage is obviously the most popular choice. And you can order on the web and stuff, which I always like. I haven’t looked at prices in a while, but I remember paying nearly as much for storage as you would to rent a similar-sized apartment. Moving stuff in and out of every storage facility I’ve ever been to has been as painless as it can be to move a bunch of heavy crap. They always have loading docks and dollies and everything you need. Manhattan Mini Storage will also sell you overpriced packing supplies if you need them in a pinch.

Also, one of my favorite Saturday TV Funhouse episodes is about the Disney Vault.

Hey Cristin- Erin’s friend Shannon — I just heard about this service called http://www.theboxbutler.com – my boss is in the middle of moving so I am up to my eyeballs in moving info — The Box Butler drops off supplies, you fill it, lock it up, and they come pick it up — they store it in a warehouse in Jersey and you can build an online profile of what’s in each box so you can access certain boxes if need be. Not sure if it is what you’re looking for, but thought I’d pass it on! If you want other storage info, lemme know -I’ll ask the boss! Good luck!

Wait a minute. You’re moving?! Where?? Please say Bay Ridge. I will give you a dollar if you move to Bay Ridge! And a lifetime supply of bacon. Possibly the $66 I’m getting as my share of the Economic Stimulus Act (I hate you more than ever, George W. Bush)! Do you have a mover? Three words: BIG AND GENTLE. They love nothing more than moving boxes of books for people in publishing, and are entirely reasonably priced. I would move every month just to keep them in business. Plus, if you act right they’ll tell you about celebrities they have moved. I got to hear all about Kiefer Sutherland when they moved me, but maybe they were just throwing me a bone because I moved to Bay Ridge.

I am of no help on the storage front, because my insanely inexpensive storage unit is out on Long Island, and there it will stay, because it’s a great way to remember to go visit my aunt every once in awhile.

Also, I just made myself a fan of Bacon too. Because it’s officially now my job to be on Facebook. No, really. Kill me!

I used Manhattan Mini Storage (the one that has all those ads in the subway) for that month that I moved home in September. It was really smooth, and they have all these deals so that you’ll use them. They have about 20 storage facilities in Manhattan and the part that was sort of weird is that their locations in midtown and chelsea are more expensive than the locations in “less desirable” neighborhoods. So I picked a cheap one on 110th on the UES. It was totally fine and clean and safe and they have a million choices of sizes of units. E-mail me if you want more info.
