Day 6- Utah

28 June 2008

We drove north from the grand canyon up to Utah and Bryce Canyon. Initially I thought this would be kind of a let down– how can you compete with the grand canyon?– but it was fantastic, even thought it took a mildly frustrating drive on one lane roads through arizona to get there. At one point I saw a tumbleweed and tried to point it out to my mom but we were driving too fast (okay, I was driving too fast) and she missed it. “How big was it?” “Big.” “How big? Like, three feet across?” After this, I was consumed with thoughts of how awesome it would be to see a tumbleweed that was, actually, three feet in diameter (the one I saw was more like a foot and a half), but it hasn’t happened yet. Hope springs eternal.

I loved it here. It was, however, amateur hour in terms of Canyon Visiting– maybe I was used to a higher caliber of nature lovers from our time at the GC, but the people at Bryce Canyon had the nerve to speak at a level slightly above that of an ESPN golf commentator and it drove me insane. When someone took a cell phone call I almost threw them over the edge.

Bryce Canyon also got the unfortunate distinction of being the place where I remembered that my camera had a black and white function and decided to be all artsy for a moment or two:

Before going back to demanding that my mom take pictures of me:

Or taking unsuspecting pictures of her in her pioneer stance while she wasn’t looking:

Or finding frozen examples of wildlife in the museum to take pictures of:

Step 2: Put your junk in that box.

And now, for those of you who couldn’t get enough of my last video of rocks with a completely unrelated soundtrack, here’s my Utah video:

Bryce Canyon from Cristin Stickles on Vimeo.

From Utah, it was off to California!

I have to say that I am loving the trip updates. I am constantly checking for current location, next stop, and the newest piece of Americana (love the postcard btw).

Thought you might also enjoy this tumbleweed video. The last clip is the best.

Having lived there for two years, I know that nothing says Pueblo, CO, better then a video of a snow/tumbleweed storm.

Now I really want to go to the Grand Canyon - I’ve always wanted to in general, it’s on my list of stuff to do someday, but now I’m thinking maybe it should get bumped up to a more concrete future date. And San Fran is one of my favorite west coast cities, so I’m glad you got to see it. Sounds like you guys are having a great time! I’m enjoying reading about it :)
