Once bitten…
13 November 2008So, so many awesome things happened on monday night that I am only just now finding out about.
For one: I couldn’t go to PJ’s show, and I assumed when I saw the next morning that he had called me after midnight just to say how much he loved me and that he wished I could have been there, and that I was the most wonderful sister in the world. But it was so. much. better than that! Ted Leo came to their show, and Peej got him to call my voicemail and sing Me & Mia into it. To paraphrase our older brother: “isn’t it great that Peej grew up to be so much cooler than we are, and he’s still using that coolness to make us happy?” My heart almost exploded when I heard that voicemail. Ted Leo! Singing my favorite part of my ass-kicking song! (when I first asked peej to get ted leo to do this like 2 months ago peej was all “I’ll tell him it’s your empowerment song” and I was all “ew, gross, don’t use that word it makes me sound like a bra burner.” But whatever works!). Now I just have to make Jeremy use his Computer Wizardry to magically extract it from my phone so I can keep it forever as a reminder of why Peej no longer has to get me Christmas or Birthday presents.
Secondly– thanks to Older Brother Bud’s compulsive internet stalking of Peej’s music career, I had the pleasure of reading the comments on this Brooklyn Vegan post this morning. Brooklyn Vegan has a special place in the hope chest of all Stickles children, as the people who leave comments there are generally The Worst Hipsters On Earth, and whenever anyone says anything remotely negative about Titus Andronicus, Bud can’t resist leaving retaliatory anonymous comments about how they’ve probably never touched a girl and should shut the fuck up. (He’s 31, and has a baby, and a mortgage, and breaks the sound barrier as part of his job. Adulthood!). The post about this show is particularly magical- and not just because of the pictures of Ted Leo, and all the awesome pictures of Peej– because it has this picture:
Ouch! Hipster foreplay gone horribly wrong! Someone get a PR Rep for Anheuser-Busch on the horn, double quick!
I would have missed this picture entirely if it hadn’t been such a favorite in the comments thread, to the point where some diligent internet researcher recognized a Craigs List ad placed as the result of that exact moment in time.
I love everything about this. Rock on.

Haha, I was reading BV comments when Titus played McCarren over the summer and they were, indeed, really petty, nasty, and stupid. That rules that your brother is regulating a bit. The Hold Steady gets similar comments every time they’re covered on the site, too; therefore, they should tour together.
In the meantime, Titus & Los Campesinos @ Bowery Ballroom on 2/15! (And also Valentine’s Day, but that’s a Thursday.)

Is Ted Leo some indie rock artist that I’m far too mainstream and uncool to have heard of?

So once, many years ago, John Krasinski called my voicemail at work. So I used Garage Band on my computer to record the message and then put it on my iPod and listened to it every day, especially after I got fired. I’m glad PJ could do something so awesome for you! My brothers could, like, get me tenth-grade history textbooks. Yours are cooler.

Zander: Yes. He’s from NJ. He also does a sick cover of Since U Been Gone, which I think you would appreciate. I’ll email it to you as soon as I have the internet at home.
All: We’re running into Voicemail Extraction issues with my phone, so if you have ideas on how to do this, tell me!
Also, WorkFriend Jen would like to point out that in the above CraigsList screen shot, you can see that I have our office browser open as a tab on the top of the screen. Oops.
