Yes, we can

24 November 2008

When one of my younger cousins started kindergarten, he was in a class so big that it made the town realize that they had to open another elementary school to avoid overcrowding. Eventually someone did the math and realized that 6 years before that class had been born, we’d had the worst snow storm our town had ever seen. North Jersians aren’t used to getting snowed in (we have big SUVs, damnit! and salt!) so when they were, they ran out of ideas for how to entertain themselves inside pretty quickly and wound up making this massive batch of Blizzard Babies. This lead to my first as-yet untested theory about birth rates: areas with high rates of board game purchasing aren’t as susceptible to baby booms.

Based loosely on this evidence, I’m predicting an August birth rate increase in the blue states. If they had called the election even an hour later I wouldn’t be as convinced that this would happen, but let’s think about it: the election closed at 11pm, and from what I saw in Brooklyn there were a looooot of happy liberals running around. I’m betting that they all went home and had Hope Sex that night.

!!! I simultaneously feel so validated by this and so disappointed in myself that I didn’t come up with the “change we can conceive in” pun.
