1 December 2008You’re going to be hearing a lot from me very shortly about buying books for Christmas– as a warm-up, here’s a rundown of NYC indie bookstores. I love any place where the crowd is described as “literary nerds and just nerds.”

A couple of years ago, my dad, who is a high school principal, attended a county inservice (basically lectures about how to do your job) day for principals and Frank McCourt was one of the speakers, since he worked in NYC public schools for so many years. And the only thing most of the audience could make out through McCourt’s nearly impenetrable accent was the multitude of F bombs. Like every other word. I enjoy picturing the dead silent auditorium full of scandalized administrators.
