Facebook, the musical!

15 December 2008

I take it back– book publishing is going to be just fine. The guy who wrote Bringing Down The House, which got turned into the movie 21, is going to write a book about Facebook, which will be turned into a movie by Aaron Sorkin.

Every once in awhile I get a piece of news like this and I become deeply conflicted about what direction I should take in the accompanying blog post. I could:

A) Talk about how much I loved Bringing Down The House, and how my older brother inhaled it in basically one sitting and how it makes a great gift book for Dudes.

B) Talk about how in Math Class this semester our professor had us discuss the Let’s Make A Deal paradigm (you choose one of three doors. The host opens one of the two remaining doors to show you that it was concealing a goat and a lifetime supply of goat feed. Do you stay with your original door, or do you switch to the other unopened door?) and when he called for answers at least 6 different groups were like “This was in 21.” And he was all “Yes, but can anyone explain why, statistically, you should always change doors?” and no one could.*

C) Come up with a McSweeneys-type list of Aaron Sorkin’s facebook feed.

Aaron is leaving his 8th unanswered voicemail for Matthew Perry

Aaron is refreshing Amazon to see where the Sports Night DVD collection is ranking.

Aaron is watching Pushing Daisies and mourning the loss of the love of his life.

D) Start fan fictioning the Facebook Book based on the proposal Gawker posted.

* This is a lie– I can explain it, I’m just anti-class participation. When you choose one of three doors, you assign it a 1 in 3 probability of being what you want. All other options have the collective probability of 2 in 3. At this point in time, that 2 in 3 probability is spread out over 2 doors. When a non-chosen door is opened and shown to be undesirable, that doesn’t change the chances of your chosen door being the right one– it still has a 1 in 3 shot. However, your “all other options” have been taken down from 2 to 1 doors, but they still have a 2 in 3 chance of being what you want. So your door has 1 in 3 but the other door has 2 in 3. ALWAYS SWITCH DOORS.

Math, you just got SERVED.

  1. Maggie Says:

Aaron is considering how best to humiliate an underling with a monologue about honor and professionalism.

Aaron is repeating the same phrase back and forth with Tommy and Snuffy.

Aaron just got called “smug” by someone on the internet; got great idea for new villain.

You should know that when I see this movie (of course I am going to see this movie) and they have a shot of a crowded dining hall or people walking to class or something, I am going to pick a brown-haired girl out of the background and claim that it is me.
